Food Security - Don't Panic Just Plant

Updated: Dec 1, 2021

No need to panic, there is enough food in the world to feed everyone says the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) However, global supply chain disruptions were predicted and have occured during Covid-19. This is a good read by the FAO http://www.fao.org/2019-ncov/q-and-a/en/

Most of you know my MA is in Sustainable Urban Agriculture & Forestation with a focus on Global Food Security which is impacted as a result of climate change. This is where I feel I can help out right now as we experience floods and loss and damage to agricultural lands during the atmospheric rivers we are experiencing in B.C. If you are interested you can read my thesis at https://repository.up.ac.za/handle/2263/26246

Planting a garden and growing in your garden, or in containers, if you have one is a good idea at any time and now is a good time to start. We need to depend on local food supply right now more than ever.

I will be posting regularly on food security on this website www.valeriedurant.ca on the topic of food security in the next while.

Pictured below is the rooftop food garden at the Fairmont Hotel in Vancouver.

I'll write about this and other initiates in the coming weeks.
